The concentration of firepower in the Lightning’s nose was so effective that a one-second burst could destroy an enemy plane. In the Pacific Theater, Lightning pilots downed more Japanese aircraft than pilots flying any other Allied airplane. “I don’t need a P-47, P-52, or a F-4U. Just give me a P-38 Lightning and I’ll be happy” Between 1942 and 1945, the thunder of P-38 Lightnings was heard around the world. U. S. Army pilots flew the P-38 over Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific; from the frozen Aleutian Islands to the sun-baked deserts of North Africa. Measured by success in combat, Lockheed engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson and a team of designers created the most successful twin-engine fighter every flown by any nation. In the Pacific Theater, Lightning pilots downed more Japanese aircraft than pilots flying any other Army Air Forces warplane. ARF KIT ONLY. ENGINE/SERVO/RADIO EQUIPMENTS NOT INCLUDED

They were the heaviest aircraft at the time to be flown from a ship at sea. The original design had shoulder-mounted wings and a crew of three in a narrow fuselage. The North American company had never designed a multi-engine bomber before. The USAAC then decided its new bomber would need a much larger payload — double the original specifications. North American designers dropped the wing to the aircraft’s mid-section, and widened the fuselage so the pilot and co-pilot could sit side-by-side. They also improved the cockpit.
